Cable ONE Now Supports Single Sign-On with Apple TV & iOS

14 January 2017
Sign in once, and that’s it!

Are you thinking about joining the ranks of cord cutters and dumping your cable TV? If you're a Cable ONE customer, you might want to rethink that idea.

Imagine, you sit down to watch television, and pick up your remote control for the Apple TV. You find Cable ONE and sign on. That’s the Single Sign-On feature built in to iOS 10.2 and tvOS. And you're done. Never have to sign on again.

Apple describes it like this:

“Do you like typing in user name and passwords for every TV app?We didn’t think so.

"Now when you enter your cable or satellite subscription credentials on Apple TV, you get immediate access to all the apps in your pay TV package that support single sign-on. So you authenticate once and you’re done. Cue the applause sign.

"...Single sign-on will be available on both Apple TV and iOS."

Unfortunately, if you have Cox Cable, this feature is unavailable. Yep, that's right. Cox serves basic cable to over 6 million subscribers, and Cable ONE has about 750,000, but Cable ONE beat Cox to this particular feature. Just eleven cable providers support Single Sign-On:

  • Cable ONE
  • CenturyLink Prism
  • DirecTV
  • Dish Network (available across the US)
  • GTA
  • GVTC
  • Hawaiian Telcom
  • Hotwire (fiber optic cable TV)
  • Metro Cast
  • Service Electric Cablevision
  • Sling TV (available across the US)

It's a way to bring your television watching experience to your phone or your Apple TV. Some apps require a cable subscription authentication. With Single Sign-On, you won't have to sign on each and every time.

Set Up

How do you set it up? That's easy-peasy.

1. Go to settings on your iPhone. Find 'TV Provider.' (Not 'TV', that's something different.) Click on that.

Privacy

Concerned about privacy issues? Here's what you are agreeing to, according to iMore:

  • Cable ONE, apps and Apple can exchange information about your subscription account
  • Cable ONE can share your user ID, household ID, account zip code and details of your subscription package
  • Your Apple TV stores your Cable ONE name and user ID locally for authorization or in your iCloud Keychain, where it is then encrypted. Apple does not know your iCloud Keychain's contents.
  • Each new app will require that you approve use of your subscription data. If you don't approve it, the app will default to the original authentication method.

You can read all the privacy details on your iPhone when you sign up.

From the Apple iPhone privacy screen. There's more detail if you
scroll down, but at least it's not in lawyer-like gobbledy-gook.

That's it!

One more thing. If you want cable tv channels, but don't want to pay the cost of cable, there is an alternative: Sling. Sling offers tv-streaming starting at $20. With add-ons, it can go up in price rather quickly. But, there are a lot of options available, including Chinese and Arabic (for a price, of course). Sling is also a Single Sign-On service.
