Senator John McCain has a campaign office in Prescott, and one of his opponents will have one too
Alex Melusky is hosting a grand opening of his campaign office on East Sheldon Street from 4 to 7 tomorrow. This event will include a meet and greet with area residents and volunteers. The 48 year old Melusky has owned and operated Optimum Graphics, a printing and promotional products company since 1993. He’s also the State Director of the FairTax organization. Senator John McCain is seeking a 6th term; his other opponents include 2012 Senate candidate Clair Van Steenwyk and former Senator Kelli Ward, who’s scheduled to call in to the Talk of the Town show on KQNA 1130 AM and 99.9 FM at 4 this afternoon. The General Election is November 8th.
Watch for City of Prescott Street Maintenance crews on Willow Creek Road today and tomorrow
Crews will be doing weeds treatment on Willow Creek Road between Danita Street and Willow Lake Road. The work will be done in both the north and southbound lanes. Also on Willow Creek Road, excavation and grading work is ongoing through this month on a new alignment. Additional work includes the installation of storm drain, sidewalks, medians and curb and gutter between Pioneer Parkway and the Deep Well Ranch Road roundabout. Work hours are Monday through Friday from 7 am to 6 pm. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes whenever possible.
The Prescott Valley Town Council meets at 5:30 tonight to discuss street improvements
According to Prescott Valley Public Works Director Norm Davis, his department budgets each year for Highway User Revenue Funds, which are gasoline tax dollars used to maintain streets. Last October, Town Council approved a half-cent sales tax to enhance street maintenance to address pavement deterioration. Two million dollars from that tax has been allocated annually for this maintenance. Chip seal work is expected to occur between June 1st and August 31st. Pavement overlays are also planned for that same time frame. Tonight’s Town Council Study Session will be held in the Library Auditorium on Civic Circle.
The co-owner of Matt’s Saloon on Whiskey Row is sharing his memories of the late country music legend Merle Haggard
Haggard, who is best known for such hits as “Okie from Muskogee,” “The Fighting Side of Me” and “Mama Tried,” died on his 79th birthday yesterday from complications from pneumonia. Matt Brassard says Haggard had been coming to his bar, Matt’s Saloon for decades. Brassard remembers Haggard as a frequent visitor to Prescott and a good tipper. Haggard also performed at the Prescott Valley Event Center in 2007 as part of the Last of the Breed tour with Willie Nelson and Ray Price.
Prescott’s Mile High Middle School football field will be the site of charity events this summer and fall
Prescott Unified School District Superintendent Joe Howard explains what’s involved in the event planning process. On Tuesday night, School Board members approved a suspension on the District’s restriction against alcohol on school grounds so these events can take place. One of them is the 4th of July celebration, and Steve Gottlieb from Eagle Management and events says planning is already underway for the move downtown. Howard explains why this location works well for businesses in the downtown area. Howard describes what the District gets from these events. Prescott Meals on Wheels, Adopt a Classroom, the Zeitz, Germany Sister City organization and Habitat for Humanity are among the organizations involved in the fundraisers.
