Bill's Newscast: Lynx Lake Trail Closures

23 January 2017
Lynx Lake trail prohibitions, death of Arizona State Historian Jack August.

New prohibitions are in effect for a Prescott National Forest trail near Lynx Lake.  A closure is in effect on the 1 mile stretch of John’s Tank Trail that connects the Lynx Lake Shore and Salida Gulch Trails.  The prohibitions will also be enforced north and south of the trail between the other 2 trails.  A map of the closure area is posted at all trailheads accessing the area, as well as on the Prescott National Forest website, fs.usda.gov and the Bradshaw Ranger District Office on Cortez Street.  While the John’s Tank Trail will be closed, the Lynx Lake Shore and Salida Gulch Trails will remain open.   Forest officials say the prohibitions are going into effect to protect bald eagles from the potential disturbance from humans during their nesting season.  Observing the closure order is critical during egg incubation and the first 6 weeks after hatching.

Arizona State Historian Jack August has died.  According to Secretary of State’s Office spokesman Matt Roberts, August died on Friday at a hospital after falling ill.  August was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in history and authored 10 books, including one called “We Call It Preskit: A Guide to Prescott and the High Country of Central Arizona” in 1996.    Last year Secretary of State Michelle Reagan appointed him to lead Philanthropy and Institutional Advancement for the Arizona Capitol Museum.   August, who lived in Prescott, taught for Northern Arizona University and was the former Executive Director at the Arizona Historical Foundation at Arizona State University.  He had been working on a biography of former Arizona Governor Fife Symington.  August had just turned 63 earlier this month.
