It's Here, the Day You've Been Waiting All Year For: Pumpkin Chunkin'

14 October 2017
It only happens once a year. Pumpkin Chunkin’ at Mortimer’s Farm.

Flinging a pumpkin through the air is not as easy as you might think. But, it can be oh, so, satisfying!

You might think of trebuchet as being a font on your computer. But actually it’s an ancient device meant to be used to break or circumvent walls and fortifications during siege warfare. Nowadays, it’s used for launching pumpkins to unimaginable distances. It’s made up of levers, axels and counterweights and is one of those things that engineers dream about.

Some people choose to use catapults instead. Think of giant slingshots. Did you know that Leonardo da Vinci even designed a catapult?

Mortimer’s Farm has an annual Pumpkin Chunkin’ competition during their October festival events.

Three awards are offered in both the Youth Division and the Adult Division:

Longest Distance (the all-time record was set by Bagdad High School in 2015 at 788 feet)

Most Accurate

Most Original Design (for the noncombustible machine)

Mortimer’s Farms provides all the pumpkins. Pumpkins are painted a different color for each team.

Look! Up in the air! It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no, it’s… A pumpkin???

It's a fun and hilarious event you really don’t want to miss. But, just in case you believe that when you’ve seen one flying pumpkin, you’ve seen them all, you will want to check out all the other activities that Mortimer’s Farm offers during their Pumpkin Festival.
