50 Years Later, the Kingsmen Are Still Singing the Hit, 'Louie, Louie'

28 July 2013

Celebrating a 50th Anniversary is a big deal, but how do you celebrate the 50th Anniversary of a song? Why, you go on tour, of course! And if you're celebrating the 50th Anniversary of two songs, by two groups, well, you split the bill and go together.

Fifty years later and still, nobody knows the lyrics to "Louie, Louie", the perennial hit from The Kingsmen.

The song first hit the airwaves in 1957, performed by its creator Richard Berry, but is best known as a chart topper for The Kingsmen, billed as the Ultimate Party Band.

The long debated lyrics were at one time the subject of an FBI obscenity investigation, but that didn't stop "Louie Louie" form being a frat favorite for half a century.

The Kingsmen are touring the country for the songs golden anniversary and made a stop at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley, AZ on July 27, splitting the bill in front of an intimate but enthusiastic crowd with The Surfaris, also celebrating the fiftieth year of their hit "Wipe Out".
