Weather Should be Fair & Warmer This Week

26 February 2019   Dr. Curtis James
Weather should be warmer this week!

Weather Discussion:

Last week, we had a rare snow event that left many snowed in. Attached shows a GeoColor satellite image from our new GOES-West (GOES-17) satellite showing the heavy snow cover as viewed from space on Saturday after skies had become virtually clear of clouds. One can see that most of Arizona (including Tucson) had snow.

Here are some official and unofficial snow amounts from Thursday to Friday of last week:

36" at Flagstaff in 24 h (an all-time record)
31" at Mountain Club
26"-28" Downtown
24.5" 2 mi south of Campus
20-23" on Campus
23" in Chino Valley
22" in Williamson Valley
15" in Dewey-Humboldt
1” in Las Vegas!

Last week’s event was comparable to the snow storm of Feb. 1987, but did not surpass the 40”-60” that was measured around Prescott from two back-to-back storms in mid-December, 1967.

Expect ridging of high pressure and mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies for the next week, with temperatures returning to near normal levels by Thursday. Within a few days, most of last week’s snow will all be melted here in Prescott. Some breezes are possible on Thursday to Friday and a weak disturbance will move across Arizona on Saturday night to Sunday, temporarily flattening the ridge and bringing a slight chance of light rain showers. Otherwise, dry weather is expected for at least a week.
