On Sale This Week: Ground Beef

26 October 2017
Ground beef is on sale, and what better way to take advantage of that than with a delicious bowl of chili?

Well, it’s close to the end of October, but we don’t want to close out the month before celebrating. Yes, friends, October is known as National Chili Month, National Dessert Month and National Pasta Month. Look for some video recipes below.

Don’t forget, next week on November 1, 2017, is Senior Discount Day at Safeway and Fry’s. All customers 55 years and older get a 10% discount on their whole order. Once the computer knows you are over 55 it will automatically give you the discount. It doesn’t matter how much or how little you buy! Sprouts doesn’t participate in this promotion, but you do get the advertised prices from both last week’s and this week’s ad.

As always, prices listed are for the Prescott area. Safeway and Fry's will require at least a Club Membership card. Some may require digital coupons as well. We try to indicate all restrictions, special conditions etc. Sprouts does not require any cards and does not have any special savings days. Every week Sprouts has double ad Wednesday, when you get last week’s and this week’s ad prices. All three stores have digital savings available to those with appropriate accounts.

Go to their web pages for details and directions. Fry’s at least will give you the advertised digital price if you state you do not have the necessary technology. Safeway sometimes has coupons which you can access digitally or clip out of the ad.

Take time to celebrate National Chili Month:

There’s quite a bit of beef, including ground beef, in the ads this week. So, cook up a pot of chili and enjoy! Friday is also American Beer Day, which might make a nice accompaniment to your chili.

Thursday: Pumpkin Day, Mincemeat Day

While October is National Dessert Month, Thursday is practically #ThanksgivingDessertTestDay. What I mean by that is Thursday is both Pumpkin Day and Mincemeat Day. Go forth and bake!

I discovered that Mince Pie has some traditions associated with it:

1. Mince pie is a favorite of Father Christmas. Children should leave a plate with pie on it at the foot of the chimney.

2. Mincemeat must only be stirred clockwise, because if you stir it counter-clockwise, it brings bad luck for the upcoming year.

3. It’s traditional to make a wish while eating the first piece of mince pie of the season.

4. Mince pies are supposed to be eaten in silence.

5. If you eat a piece of mince pie each day for the 12 days of Christmas, you will have good luck for the upcoming year.

So, with all that said, you’d better get cracking on your mince pie skills. If you want to make ultra-traditional mince pie, check out the 16th-century and the 19th-century recipes for Mince Meat on… Wikipedia?!?? Yep, here: Mincemeat

Nowadays, most people make homemade mincemeat without the meat, and even without the suet. For a modern, sanitized version of Homemade Mincemeat check out this recipe.

If all that is too much work, go to your local store and buy a jar of mincemeat. It’s pretty easy from there - just make a double pie crust, like the bottom of a pie pan, poke a few holes in the bottom with a fork, add in your mincemeat filling, top with the other half of the pie crust, seal and bake.

You can also make little mini-pies, which are pretty cute (and would be great for the mincemeat pie every day tradition during the 12 Days of Christmas.)

Let’s change the channel and focus on Pumpkin a bit. Here are 7 Desserts for Pumpkin Lovers (which is also a way to celebrate National Dessert Month, just sayin’.)
