Letter to the Editor: Photo Radar Should Be Based on Safety

29 January 2013   State Representative Debbie Lesko
State Representative Lesko introduces new legislature on photo radar systems.

“Many people thought that photo radar on state highways would no longer exist after Governor Brewer decided not to renew the state’s contract a few years ago. What most don’t realize is that cities can still place photo radar cameras on state highways. I, for one, believe the use of photo radar systems should be based on public safety needs.

With that in mind, I have sponsored legislation that will require cities to prove to the Arizona Department of Transportation that there is a public safety justification for placing photo radar on state highways and will require the city to show that public safety was improved as a result of the photo radar when they apply for renewal. There are photo radar cameras on state highways in El Mirage, Globe,PrescottValley, Show Low,StarValley,SuperiorandTucson.

Please contact me with your input which I will be more than happy to share with your local state legislator. You can contact me at (602) 926-5413 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
