Grant of $125,000 Will Extend Efforts to Save More Animal Lives in Yavapai County

PRESCOTT, Ariz., (May 17, 2016) – Yavapai Humane Society of Prescott, Ariz. today announced it has been awarded a $125,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to support its work in sheltering animals, providing vaccinations and medical treatment, spaying/neutering, and creating lifesaving communities across the Southwest.

Yavapai Humane Society is a nonprofit organization serving Yavapai County that promotes and protects the health, safety, and welfare of all animals. Since 1972, Yavapai Humane Society has cared for homeless cats and dogs. In 2010, the organization embraced a No Kill Ethic, increasing its live release rate from just 68 percent in 2009 to 90 percent in a short two years. It has maintained a 97 percent live release rate—the highest in the state of Arizona, and among the highest in the nation—for three consecutive years.

The Petco Foundation grant will help Yavapai Humane Society prepare animals for adoption, which costs the organization, on average, $412 per animal. In addition, the grant will retrofit one wing in the shelter’s Pet Adoption Center to facilitate adoptions of dogs who need a quieter area to recover from surgery, or who are more fearful of a shelter environment. Yavapai Humane Society partners with other shelters and rescue groups across the Southwest through its New Hope Program in sharing resources to give each pet its best chance. Thanks to the Petco Foundation, the Yavapai Humane Society can save even more animals.

“The only way to continue our lifesaving work and save more lives is to work together as a community. We are deeply grateful to the Petco Foundation for once again being a part of our lifesaving efforts. The Petco Foundation’s investment in YHS will allow us to continue to strive for the day when every animal has a loving home and is well-cared for all of its life,” said Ed Boks, Executive Director.
