Roughriders Finish the Zinger Invitational with an 11-3 Victory over SLCC

Yavapai’s bats were hot Sunday afternoon.
The Roughrider baseball team concluded the Zinger Invitational with an 11-3 victory over Salt Lake Community College Sunday afternoon in Mesa. Yavapai finishes the weekend with a 3-1 record and are now 6-1 on the young season.

YC jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three complete innings. Salt Lake cut the deficit in half with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. However, Yavapai extended the lead in the sixth inning with a pair of runs and added four more runs in their half of the seventh inning. Salt Lake added a run in the bottom of the eighth only to have YC score a run in the top of the ninth.

Every starter got a hit in the game as the Riders got 17 knocks, 7 for extra bases. Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Jack Silverman each had three hits and each had a triple. CJ Valdez had two hits with a homerun and a double. Matt Novis, Cameron Jowaiszas and Damone Hale were each 2 for 4. Willie Cano was 1 for 4 with three runs batted in.

Trey Morrill got the start for the Riders throwing 4.1 innings giving up 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out six. Declan Dutton threw three three innings to record the victory and Bobby Meza finished the game tossing 1.2 innings with one strikeout.

The Roughriders play a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, February 13th at Arizona Christian University. The first pitch will be thrown at 12:00 PM. Yavapai begins conference play on Saturday, February 15that South Mountain Community College starting at 12:00 PM.
