The Cougars have won two in a row to even their record, but this is a much different Knights team than they faced a year ago. Last year Chino Valley won at home 26-7.
The Knights finished (1-9) last year and are well ahead of that this season. Quarterback Mark Chavez has thrown for 9 touchdown passes, with 3 interceptions, while completing 42%. Richard Williams carries the ball 92% of the time, and has rushed for 637 yards and 7 touchdowns. Bryan Dyson and Dawson Moulesong have 21 receptions and 509 yards reception with 4 touchdowns between them.
Chino Valley’s Jayden Smith is averaging 165 yards a game through the air with 6 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Smith leads the team in rushing with 151 yards and 3 touchdowns. J.R. Willingham and Jacob Gilpin are Smith’s top two receivers, each with 2 TD receptions. Collin Knight leads the team in tackles.
Look for a much different game from a year ago. The game will be more challenging for the Cougars, but they have the weapons to pull it out. Game time temps in the upper 80s.
Badgers Open Region Play At Home
Flagstaff Eagles (2-1) at Prescott Badgers (2-2), Bill Shepard Field, Prescott H.S., 7pm
This will be a big night for the Prescott Badgers in more than one way. The Badgers will get their first taste on their brand new field. It also marks homecoming and the first game of Grand Canyon Region play.
Last season the Badgers squeaked by the Eagles in a 27-24 overtime thriller at the NAU Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff.
Prescott evened their record last week with a 46-0 win at Deer Valley. Quarterback Dellin Boyd has his best game so far throwing the ball last week. Boyd was 7-11, 150 yards and 2 touchdowns. The QB also picked up 59 yards on 7 carries. Trey Koehler hauled in 3 passes for 103 yards and 1 touchdown. Sylas Espitia has 225 yards rushing and 6 touchdowns. Boyd who is always a threat to run has 221 yards on the ground.
Sam Giordan leads the team with tackles, followed by Rhett Pearce and Nathan Wright. Clay Gross is averaging over 36 yards a punt, with two inside the 20.
After double digit wins over Glendale and Dysart, the Flagstaff Eagles managed only a first quarter touchdown in last weeks 18-7 at Tempe.
Quarterback Joe Weidinger at 6’4” has the ability to have some clear vision down the field, completing 55% of his pass attempts. Luis Jaramillo is the leading rusher for the Eagles. Jace Wetzel is Weidinger’s top target.
Look for the Badgers to continue to run the ball, but if that proves to be to challenging, the passing of Dellin Boyd May be needed a tad more. Their will be a festive atmosphere since this is homecoming and the debut of the new field. Expect a larger crowd for tonights game.
The weather is a changing, and a light jacket would not be a bad idea as temperatures will start off in the upper 60s at game time.
Lee Williams Volunteers (2-1) at Bradshaw Mountain Bears (2-2), Bob Pavlich Field, Prescott Valley, 7pm
The Volunteers of Lee Williams pay a visit to Prescott Valley in hopes of snatching a win over the Bears.
Last season Bradshaw Mountain beat Lee Williams 44-14 at Kingman.
Lee Williams got an unexpected bye week since their game with Kingman Academy was cancelled. The Volunteers are led by junior quarterback Levi Beckham, who has completed 57% of his passes for 275 yards, with 2 touchdowns and 4 interceptions.
Wesley Boyd leads the offense in rushing with 284 yards and 2 touchdowns. Boyd is also the favorite target on passes thrown by Beckham.
The Volunteers only have scored 36 points in three games for a 12 point per game average. Their defense has been solid, only allowing 22 points, all to Buckeye in a 22-18 loss on August 30.
Bradshaw Mountain looks to get back on the winning track but they will have to overcome a stingy Lee Williams defense. Quarterback Josh Grant has had mixed results through four games. Grant has thrown for 381 yards and 5 TDS, but has thrown 7 interceptions. Titus King with 189 yards, along with Grant’s 187 yards lead the team in rushing.Alex Cabral has 10 receptions for 177 yards and 4 touchdowns. Defensively,, Noah Shaver leads the team in tackles, with a 16.8 average.
The Bears need to get back what they do best, which is a healthy mix of run and pass.. If they can keep the Lee Williams defense off balanced, then it should be a very good night for the home team.
Game time temps in the mid 60s.
