CHINO VALLEY- The Cougars hosted the Cowboys of Camp Verde on Friday night, coming out of the gate strong for their opening night of the season. CVHS led Camp Verde 21-6 in the third, and completed the victory with a 29-6 score. That had to be a relief to Coach Apap, after last year's disappointing record of 1-9. Their lone win last year was also against Camp Verde.
This year's team has 11 returning seniors. Sophomore Jake Clawson is leading the team as QB.
Next week, the Cougars travel to Wickenburg for a 7 PM game.
It was an emotional evening, as the opening ceremonies featured a dedication to the 19 firefighters lost in the Yarnell Hill Fire this past June, including CVHS’s own Wade Parker, who had played both football and baseball at Chino Valley High School. Parkers parents Michelle and Danny were presented Wades football and baseball jersey’s before the singing of the national Anthem, then the two were escorted to mid field for the opening coin toss.
